A short story by Ghost
This was actually a dream I had
After my vision cleared, I noticed that I was unable to move easily. "What the hell!", I managed to say, feeling a surge of panic creeping up my spine and overwhelming my mind with a rush of fear, just like an avalanche.
I cannot accurately estimate the duration during which the panic tightly gripped me, leading me to thrash violently within my "cocoon," as my rational mind perceived it. However, the moment my elbow broke through, I suddenly stopped. Recognizing this potential escape, my rational mind started to suppress the panic, allowing me to regain my ability to think clearly.
I employed breathing techniques to calm my heart rate and breathing, while tightening and relaxing all my muscles in sync with my breath. Soon enough, I regained mental clarity, directing my attention sharply towards the tiny opening my elbow had accidentally made. A faint beam of light shone through, dimly illuminating the inside.
As I inserted my fingers into the opening, I sensed warm air, but upon widening it to peer through, a sudden chill sent shivers down my spine. "Where the hell am I?"
Without observing any motion or hearing any noise aside from the constant whir of heavy equipment in the distance, I recalled the knife concealed in my boot and instinctively reached for it, pondering its presence.
It was true! I had all my usual belongings with me, including my beloved Zippo lighter. Without hesitation, I sparked the flint to evaluate my circumstances. The sight of the flickering flame lifted my spirits slightly.
Upon closer inspection, I realized the cocoon resembled a chrysalis, predominantly composed of a substance resembling shellac. Using a lighter, I carefully examined the hole, inserting the knife blade and sawing back and forth. The material yielded easily, allowing me to slice open the cocoon from top to bottom. Emerging into a circular chamber, I found it packed with cocoons similar to mine, reaching from the floor to the ceiling. Unfortunately, I couldn't discern whether they were occupied or empty.
Glancing around, I noticed that all the surroundings were constructed from the chrysalis material. The floors, walls, everything. "This reminds me of something, like a wasp's nest. But why am I here? How did I end up in this place?" I muttered out loud, which turned out to be a misstep.
My voice seemed to bring everything around me to life. A ripple effect spread through the surroundings, followed by a sudden hissing sound emanating from one of the corridors entering the room, gradually increasing in volume.
My mind shouted urgently, prompting my feet to spring into action without hesitation, propelling me into a sprint. My objective became the nearest corridor leading away from the source of that ominous hiss, even though I had no clue of its destination. The sound filled me with a sense of foreboding, setting every nerve on edge, driving me to escape its grasp at all costs.
With each step I took, the hissing sound grew closer. Not only could I hear it, but I could also sense its presence. It wasn't just one being, but many, all of them intent on capturing me.
The corridor abruptly came to a dead end, leaving me feeling trapped. I turned around to confront my unseen enemy, realizing that I had no chance of survival. In my final moments, a swarm of insects engulfed me, causing excruciating pain as they pierced into my skin and burrowed deep inside me. They encased me in a cocoon once more, and that was the last sight I beheld.
As my eyes slowly open, I become aware of my restricted movement. Instead of panic, a surge of pure rage and insatiable hunger fills me. With a single powerful motion, I break free from the cocoon that confines me, emerging in a new form. I observe my bat-like wings, complete with clawed feet and hands, realizing I am hovering in the air. The beastly power I now possess pulses through me, intensifying the unbearable hunger within.
After hurling myself against a wall, I effortlessly broke through it and several more until I emerged outside. It dawned on me that my thoughts were rapidly transforming, as the insatiable hunger consumed my mind entirely. Flesh, the act of tearing and ripping flesh apart, bloody carnage - the hunger was the sole focus.
"The hunger." Those were the final lucid words I uttered with a human consciousness before I unfurled my wings and soared towards the twinkling lights in the distance. Those lights symbolize human presence, and humans mean bodies to shred and devour, satisfying the hunger.
