Random Thoughts: What We Allow Will Continue

The more depravity that a society allows, the more depraved its members will seek to become. ~Ghost

(Opinion)

I read a report that Spirit Airlines is now introducing a "dress code" for its flights, which made me reflect on broader societal issues, as this has become a widespread problem affecting many aspects of our lives. We hear about them every day on the news and the powers that be only have one answer, more restrictions. Of course, people are now raising their voices, complaining about these restrictions being imposed on them once again completely missing or ignoring the underlying problem.

The real question we should be asking is why any of these restrictions are necessary in the first place. The reason, obviously, is that too many people fail to behave appropriately. They resemble a group of unsupervised toddlers, leaving others to deal with their messes.

How about let's try a different approach for $hit$ and giggles. Instead of wasting our time and energy complaining about the restrictions imposed due to others' behavior, let's address the root issue: the small group of individuals who can't seem to behave in public. I don't care how they act in private, but in public, we all share the same space and have agreed on certain acceptable behaviors when we're together. These are our societal norms, and most of us have the common courtesy to follow them.

Remember during COVID when politicians and the media used "community policing" to pressure everyone into wearing masks? I believe in "turnabout is fair play" as long as the ends justify the means, meaning it stops the spread of "evil" and promotes the ideas of "good." These concepts are of course subjective, but I stand by the socially accepted notion of "Good," which is the perspective I take.

Problem: This bad behavior persists because WE (society) allow it, so any negative consequences resulting from our inaction are on us, not them. The "evil" people are merely doing what "evil" people do, and we as a "good" nation seem to have forgotten that it is OUR responsibility to stop them. The more we tolerate this behavior, the worse it will become.

Solution: WE AS A SOCIETY STOP LETTING THEM GET AWAY WITH IT!

It is time to address the problem, stop ignoring it, and stop turning a blind eye to things we know are wrong, speak up. Remember these individuals are invading OUR space, disrupting OUR serenity, and if WE make it clear to them in non-violent ways that we won't tolerate it anymore, WE solve the problem.

You'd be surprised by the psychological impact of being silently and angrily stared at by a group of people. JS
